India’s Davis Cup Run Ends in Second Round After South Korea Defeat

The first match for India against South Korea in the second round was played by DK Suresh in the singles event on September 18, when he faced South Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon. Suresh made a strong start and won the opening set 6-3 to take a 1-0 lead. Kwon responded in the second set, putting Suresh under pressure and winning it 6-3 to level the match at 1-1.

The third set saw a closely contested battle between the two players. Kwon eventually won the set 6-4 to take the match 2-1 and give South Korea a 1-0 lead against India in the second round.

Sumit Nagal was then expected to produce a strong performance in the second singles match, but the low bounce on the Korean court proved troublesome for him. His match against Hyeon Chung lasted three hours.

Nagal started well and won the opening set 6-2 in the match played on September 18. Chung then mounted a comeback in the second set, winning it 6-4 to level the match at 1-1. The third set was closely contested, but Chung eventually prevailed 7-5 to win the match 2-1 and extend South Korea’s lead over India to 2-0.

After losing both opening matches on September 18, India returned to action on September 19 for the third match, the doubles event. N Sriram Balaji and DK Suresh represented India against South Korea’s Jisung Nam and Uisung Park.

The Indian pair made the expected start, winning the first set 6-3. The South Korean pair responded strongly in the second set, winning it 6-3 to level the match at 1-1. India then won the third set 6-3 to take the match 2-1 and open its account with a victory against South Korea in the second round.

The doubles victory kept India’s hopes of reaching the final eight alive, with the fourth match becoming crucial. Sumit Nagal returned to the court to face Soonwoo Kwon.

Nagal appeared out of form in the match as Kwon dominated the opening set, winning it 6-1. Kwon then won the second set 6-2 to complete a straight-sets victory. It was South Korea’s third win of the second round and brought India’s Davis Cup campaign to an end.

The defeat ended India’s second-round campaign at the Olympic Tennis Court in Seoul after the team managed one victory in the doubles event but could not overcome South Korea’s three match wins.
